Greenville police accused a 53-year-old man of swindling more than $70,000 from his victims by posing as an Immigration Agent who could help them gain legal status.

Charges against Greenville’s Michael Ruiz include trafficking, extortion, agent impersonation, financial identity fraud and the sale of fictitious licenses, local media reported Friday.

Ruiz is being held at the Greenville County Jail without bail. It is unknown immediately if he has an attorney.

Greenville police said Ruiz was arrested as part of a human trafficking investigation.

Police say “he swindled at least six people by telling them he was a police or immigration agent who could provide them with legal documents in exchange for money” and “threatened to deport them” in case they did not pay.

The police requested that if there are more victims to contact the department.
